Yesterday, CAA issued an Information Notice regarding the use of Mogas (motor gasoline) in aircraft. It clarifies the current position on Mogas use and paves the way for future developments. At the current time, it’s ‘business as usual’ and aircraft owners must abide by the rule that if Mogas has been approved for use in their aircraft then it mustn’t contain alcohol (microlights continue to be exempt from this requirement).

In due course, the CAA intends to amend Generic Concession No. 5 (in CAP747) which covers this requirement, allowing the LAA to investigate the approval of eligible aircraft to use Mogas with ethanol without specific CAA oversight. This is an activity that has already started but will be able to continue with fewer regulatory hurdles. LAA will issue guidance and procedures for owners wishing to use Mogas with ethanol once our investigations are complete: this is likely to be published towards the end of 2014.
