LAA PERMIT AIRCRAFT TO BE AVAILABLE FOR POST-PPL HIRE AND TRAINING

The remunerated use of selected aircraft operating on LAA Permits to Fly has been enabled by a new change in CAA regulations announced this week. The revisions to the Air Navigation Order will enable post-PPL training and hire, allowing pilots who do not own a Permit aircraft to undertake flight instruction and self-fly hire on a commercial basis.

The move will potentially allow heritage aircraft on Permits to Fly such as de Havilland Chipmunks, Jodels  or Piper Cubs to be used in flying club environments for tailwheel training, while newer sport aircraft types will potentially add greater diversity and lower operating costs to a flying school line-up, while owners of under-utilised aircraft may be able to offer their aircraft to others. There is also a major future safety benefit in allowing pilots to train in their club or school environment in a type in which they might in future wish to own – allowing a safer type conversion process.

“MY DREAM TO FLY” : NEW THEME FOR LAA, FAI YOUNG PEOPLE’S AVIATION ART COMPETITION

“My Dream to Fly” is the theme for the UK’s Aviation Art Contest 2019, for 6-17 year olds. The Light Aircraft Association is facilitating the UK competition in association with the   Royal Aero Club, Pilot magazine and the Guild of Aviation Artists. The winning UK entries will be sent to Lausanne in March 2019 for judging in the Federation Aeronautique Internationale’s Aviation Art Contest. Following a successful debut year in 2018, we look forward to receiving entries from across the UK, from individuals and schools as well as Air Scouts and Air Cadets. The closing date for entries will be 31st January 2019.

AIR COURTAGE ASSURANCES - OFFERING INSURANCE SPECIFIC TO LAA MEMBERS’ NEEDS

The LAA is sharing its stand again this year with Air Courtage Assurances, who last year launched the first tailor-made insurance programme designed for, and exclusive to, LAA members. Air Courtage Assurances is a leading insurance broker for general aviation in Europe and their exclusive LAA member offering links the insurance to a member and pilot, rather than the traditional, aircraft-led policy.

 

This allows pilots to fly any other similar aircraft, a flexibility that was lost for many pilots when EC requirements were linked to specific aircraft in traditional policies. It also allows greater ‘tailoring’ of policies to pilot skills and safety records, including discounts for pilots who have gained LAA ‘Wings’ qualifications or attended LAA Training Courses, Pilot Coaching or GASCo safety events.

 

THIRTY UNDER THIRTY OFFER ATTRACTS NEW MEMBERS

 

The Light Aircraft Association’s  "30 Under 30" membership category, which offers a year’s membership for £30 rather than the existing £58 for any applicant under 30 years of age has attracted some 60 new members since its launch at Aero Expo last year. The Association’s aim is to attract younger, more recently qualified flyers to extend their passion for flying and share the Association’s commitment to affordable flying for fun.
