Due to lack of interest, the April 2014 courses have had to be cancelled. If you've registered on any of the courses, please contact Coventry University for a full refund of course fees. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Following the success of the first series of courses, held in April 2013, the LAA and Coventry University are proud to offer a third series of specialist courses designed for LAA members.

The five design courses run in the first series and the three stress courses run in the second series are being repeated in April 2014. Comments from previous delegates have been taken on board and the courses have been adjusted to make them even more useful and relevant to LAA members. The series outlined below aims to supplement the practical courses that the LAA runs through the Educational Trust. The courses will be delivered by experts from Coventry University and will be held in Coventry University’s new £55m Engineering & Computing building.

12.00-13.00   Lunch
17.00 Finish

This course aims to provide an introduction to aerodynamic theory and aerodynamic effects whilst showing how calculations can compare with wind tunnel test results. The course will provide an appreciation of aerodynamic effects and give an introduction to the theory and practice of scale model testing. In particular, the course aims to provide a practical insight into the changes in aerodynamic behaviour as the angle of attack is varied.

This course aims to help you:

  • Compare measured and theoretical aerodynamic aerofoil performance.
  • Assess the effect of control surfaces and surface gaps on aerodynamic performance.
  • Assess and explain the cause and effect of wing-tip vortices, boundary layer flow, flow detachment (stall), and interference effects.
  • Design a wind tunnel test setup to measure aerofoil performance.
  • Calculate appropriate testing scaling factors.
  • Interpret wind tunnel test results to evaluate coefficients.

Light Aircraft - Aerodynamic Simulation (Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics)
10 April 2014
Coventry University

Cost: LAA members £250 per module or £1000 for all 5 'design' courses - includes lunch

09.00-09.30 Registration/Refreshments
09.30    Start
12.00-13.00   Lunch
17.00 Finish

This course aims to provide a practical introduction to CFD, with a particular focus on how CFD can aid in the design of light aircraft through a series of practical examples. Additionally, only bespoke open-source software will be used. This will enable participants to commence applying CFD to support their design efforts without the need to pay large licensing fees.

This course aims to help you:

  • Understand the fundamentals of CFD.
  • Identify suitable problems that can be analysed with CFD.
  • Understand some of the limitations of CFD.
  • Apply CFD to simple design/aerodynamics problems.
  • Interpret and present CFD results in order to make informed design decisions.

Light Aircraft - Flight Simulation Analysis
11 April 2014
Coventry University

Cost: LAA members £250 per module or £1000 for all 5 'design' courses - includes lunch

09.00-09.30 Registration/Refreshments
09.30    Start
12.00-13.00   Lunch
17.00 Finish

This one day course will give an introduction to the theory and practice of flight simulation testing and an appreciation of performance effects. In particular, it will offer a practical insight into the changes in performance behaviour as the design of an aircraft is changed.

Light Aircraft – Fundamental Structural Analysis
14th April 2014
Coventry University

Cost: LAA members £250 per module or £625 for all 3 'stress' courses - includes lunch

09.00-09.30 Registration/Refreshments
09.30    Start
12.00-13.00   Lunch
17.00 Finish

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction and overview of the main topics required for carrying out fundamental (static) structural calculations with an emphasis on aerospace structures. The course will contain three major topics: principles of solid mechanics, performing solid mechanical calculations and shear panels. The course will contain a mixture of miniature lectures as well as practical worked examples, including applying theory via manual calculations and demonstration of physical testing using the university’s strength test facilities.
