Originally opened by the RAF during the Second World War, it opened for civilian use in 1947. BEA operated flights to Heathrow using Tridents in the 1970’s. Dan Air and others operated on and off for a while to Heathrow and Gatwick, with Easyjet serving Luton.

The airport is a main hub for the Scottish Highlands and Islands service.
